FAQ

Frequently asked questions and answers about children’s teeth

When should we start brushing children’s milk teeth?

All 20 baby teeth have erupted by around the age of 3. It is important to start caring for them from the moment the first baby tooth appears. Initially, you can clean them with a cotton swab or use a finger toothbrush. Once the first molars appear, we recommend purchasing a special children’s toothbrush.

My child has no motivation to brush their teeth – what can I do?

We recommend using a training toothbrush to introduce your child to regular and thorough dental care. From the age of 3, you can also try an electric toothbrush for children – children often find these more entertaining than boring manual toothbrushes. To increase motivation to brush teeth, it often helps to get creative or use a few tricks: a toothbrushing song, a favourite CD, an entertaining story. The family plays an important role model function here, so try brushing teeth at the same time as mom or dad.  A patient atmosphere is always helpful.

How can bottle tooth decay be prevented?

With today’s lightweight plastic bottles, children can suckle for hours or even fall asleep while suckling – both of which should be avoided, especially if the bottles contain sweetened drinks. It is best to offer water and unsweetened tea at night. The sooner your child learns to drink from a glass, the better.

At what age should we take our child to the dentist for the first time?

The earlier, the better. The first visit is mainly about getting to know each other, sizing each other up, and building a positive relationship.
